The Registered Nurse practicing in the  Health Clinic is the primary care-giver to the patients who present to the Clinic. The RN is responsible for promoting and implementing the standards of practice and utilizing the standards of care established by the Tennessee Board of Nursing and the American College Health Association to enhance the educational process by maximizing the health and wellbeing of the students physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, developmentally, and spiritually. This is accomplished through the promotion of an optimal level of health for each individual and in conjunction with University policies and procedures. The nurse will comply with the legal requirements set forth by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) as it relates to the treatment of confidential medical information. The nurse will have full knowledge of and abide by the provisions detailed in this job description as well as all written or verbal policies, procedures, and instructions established by administration in the University Staff Handbook.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed by the state of Tennessee to practice as a Registered Nurse and maintain licensure.
  • Maintain certification in CPR ( Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and BLS ( Basic Life Support) which includes the use of the AED (automated external defibrillator)
  • Experience in Medical-Surgical Nursing with patient care applications
  • Possess excellent clinical skills that are used to plan and implement nursing care in conformance with currently recognized nursing techniques and procedures
  • Utilize continuing education programs to enhance skills and to update knowledge base with new nursing practice processes

  • Perform health history of patients, broad based clinical assessments, and medical evaluations for a variety of illnesses and conditions
  • Provide emergency medical care and referral

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform Quality Assurance for the in-house lab and maintain compliance with 
  • CLIA and OSHA requirements for laboratory testing
  • Perform inventory, ordering, and stocking of necessary medicines and supplies in the clinic
  • Participate in the travel clearance process, and possess extensive knowledge for all university sponsored trips abroad to include travel clinics, physical exams, immunizations, documentation, and reporting
  • Possess knowledge of immunizations and medications housed within the clinic
  • Assist RDs and RAs with resident hall health promotion, injury prevention, and medical interventions
  • Help coordinate a blood drive on campus as scheduled each year
  • Help coordinate and participate in an annual Health Fair and influenza campaign each fall
  • Attend quarterly clinic staff meetings and other meetings as requested by the Director
  • Recommend the appropriate follow-up care for those patients testing positive to the Tuberculin Skin Test in collaboration with the Health Department and Chattanooga TB Clinic. 
  • Carry out reasonable instructions given by the Director of Health Services and clinic physicians
  • Carry out reasonable instructions given by the President, Vice President for Student Development, and other University administrative leaders
  • Participate in university wellness promotion, health education, and counseling
  • Communicate effectively, relaying accurate information to faculty, staff, parents, and students in a timely manner by email or phone
  • Provide clear documentation, charting, and reporting 
  • Input and maintain accurate data and records with confidentiality
  • Perform general administrative duties as requested by the departmental director 
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with others in a courteous and professional manner
  • Operate as a team player in a fast-paced environment
