Essential Job Functions

A Welder is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: fabricates steel and iron structures; fabricates and installs parts or makes alterations on construction equipment in the shop or field; face-hardens  equipment; remove, replace, install blades, ripper teeth, and buckets on construction equipment; fabricate, install, modify, and repair various metal objects such as water tanks, guard and handrails and access ladders; installs or repairs water, air steam, gas or drain lines and appurtenances; performs rigging work to move or install equipment and machinery; perform welding from blue prints, sketches or verbal instructions; prepare work estimates and orders supplies; and drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Four years of experience doing blacksmithing and electric and gas welding, one year of which must have been at the journey-level*.

Vision: Normal color perception.

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Certification by the Department of Building and Safety of the City of Los Angeles to do structural welding.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class IV - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
Required experience must be fully met and indicated on the application at the time of filing.

*Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an interview covering training, experience, personal fitness, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the interview in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Final results will be sent by U.S. postal mail.  Test scores cannot be disclosed over the phone.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility. 

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The resulting eligible list for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Works.
