PART-TIME Library Reference Assistant

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Library Services and general supervision of the Director of Library Services, the Reference Assistant provides assistance to the administration, faculty, staff and students of the university and the Seminary to maximize the productive use of information resources for study, learning, research and pleasure. This is a part-time, 20-hour per week position. The Library Reference Assistant must be willing to work scheduled and varying shifts and special events, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays (as needed).


Education & Work Experience:


Bachelor degree, preferably with evidence of strong research ability

Two (2) years' experience working in a library setting or any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities


Masters degree from an accredited academic institution

Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system

Skill Requirements:

  • Excellent customer service, communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently under minimum supervision in accordance with established procedures, but function as part of a team
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of computers, data processing software, email programs, spreadsheet design, and telephones
  • Excellent working knowledge of research techniques/methods, including various documentation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Library of Congress classification system
  • Ability to learn thoroughly the physical layout of the library and direct patrons to the requested/needed area of the facility
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment (copier, printer, etc.) and the ability to assist others in using the equipment as necessary
  • Thorough familiarity with library website and its contents
  • Considerable ability to pay attention to detail
  • Knowledge of paraprofessional library principles, methods, techniques and procedures (including the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding library patron records and other classified information)
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm in difficult situations
  • Willing to present a professional image and work ethic
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Strong organizational and decision making skills

Essential Functions:

·        The specific job functions of this position may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Answers reference questions in person, by telephone, by email or by instant message
  • Assists patrons in identifying, focusing and stating their desired research needs
  • Assists patrons in identifying, locating and accessing desired library materials
  • Instruct patrons in the use of catalogs, databases and other print and electronic resources
  • Assists patrons in requesting interlibrary loan materials
  • Assists patrons in using computers and software systems available in the library and refers to the university's help desk as need
  • Prove patrons with directions within the library and on campus
  • Answers telephones and provides routine information or refers and transfers calls
  • In the absence of the Daytime/Evening Supervisor, oversees the full range of circulation desk procedures using an automated circulation system and supervises desk staff
  • When closing for the day, secures cash from circulation desk and secures entire building
  • May participate as part of a team providing library instruction in a classroom setting
  • Assists with special projects
  • Performs other services and duties as assigned
